"I have loved living on Capel Road for the past 20 years. It has always been a quiet friendly street. In Nov 2019 we set up a WhatsApp group for the Pub to Ridley Road which has created almost a village community where we share information/plants/household items. During recent months it has been a godsend to live opposite Wanstead flats where there are duck ponds with several swans and a 15 min walk away is Wanstead Park with has amazing bluebell forest which is in bloom in the spring. Forest Gate now has several independent coffee shops which is a 10 min walk away. There are great transport links to Stratford & Central London. Forest Gate & Manor Park stations are equidistance (10-15 min walk) from flat which are on the new Elizabeth Line into Central London (and further soon). Wanstead Part Station will take you north all the way to Gospel Oak."

If you’ve already heard Chiwetel Ejiofor or Idris Elba proudly discussing their hometown, you probably don’t need us to convince you of Forest Gate’s merits, but for those who haven’t, let us catch you up…

With a heritage rooted in culture, it’s not surprising that Forest Gate has a strong creative community today. During just one week in the 60s, the Upper Cut Club music venue there hosted – deep breath – The Who, the Animals, the Spencer Davis Group, Geno Washington and Jimi Hendrix. These days you’re more likely to find the area’s artistic-types supping drinks in the cool cafes and bars. Along with the period property and proximity to green space, this independent scene has been the main draw for new arrivals to the area, although the fact that Forest Gate is now on the Crossrail’s Elizabeth line has definitely helped nudge people in the right direction.
