a word from the owner...

"We took a bit of a punt on moving to Forest Gate, but fortunately it paid off because it’s a super special place to live. The flat itself has been amazing as it’s so spacious. We love to host, so having such a big kitchen/diner has been great but also when friends and family stay, they’re chuffed to have their own ensuite! Having such a spacious second bedroom has meant it can double up as an office, which is ideal for any working from home a lot like we do. The neighbours are also lovely; we have made some pals for life living there! Despite living in a few different cities and towns, we’ve never experienced a community like Forest Gate. There are some amazing places to eat and drink here and if you go there as often as we do, you’ll end up on first name terms with the owners. Walking our dog in Wanstead Flats and West Ham park every day feels like a little slice of countryside in the city. It’s also super easy to get around with the lizzie line and overground being a 10 minute walk, and Stratford being a 10 minute bus away. As much as we hoped we’d stay in Forest Gate forever, we’ve made the big decision to move to the sticks to be closer to family. That said, we’ll be back regularly for cinnamon buns and coffee at Ramble, our fave pasta in the world at fiore and a big roast and pint after a walk on the flats at holly tree!"

Our Local Guide:
Forest Gate

Atherton Mews, Forest Gate — Stow Brothers

If you’ve already heard Chiwetel Ejiofor or Idris Elba proudly discussing their hometown, you probably don’t need us to convince you of Forest Gate’s merits, but for those who haven’t, let us catch you up…

With a heritage rooted in culture, it’s not surprising that Forest Gate has a strong creative community today. During just one week in the 60s, the Upper Cut Club music venue there hosted – deep breath – The Who, the Animals, the Spencer Davis Group, Geno Washington and Jimi Hendrix. These days you’re more likely to find the area’s artistic-types supping drinks in the cool cafes and bars. Along with the period property and proximity to green space, this independent scene has been the main draw for new arrivals to the area, although the fact that Forest Gate is now on the Crossrail’s Elizabeth line has definitely helped nudge people in the right direction.
