No wonder it’s become such a popular area for families looking to make their money go a little further. For a start, there’s a Marks and Spencer and Waitrose on the vibrant high street, as well as independent stores and eateries. It has incredibly easy access to the City and West End (18 mins to Liverpool St or 27 mins Oxford Circus on the Central line), and with Epping Forest a stone’s throw in the other direction, residents really do feel like they’ve got the best of both worlds.

No wonder it’s such a happy community. Luckily they’re a friendly, inclusive bunch too, pleased to welcome both new residents and visitors alike.

“South Woodford was home for the first 25 years of my life. As I get older, I realise how lucky I am to have grown up here, an area with such fantastic schools, amenities and green space.

George Lane is the main hub, where you’ll find the Central line station, as well as a great selection of supermarkets — M&S, Sainsburys, Waitrose and a Co-op. On top of this, is a fantastic choice of bars, pubs and restaurants, as well as an Odeon Cinema, library and gym. You really do have everything on your doorstep. Personal favourites for food include the Japanese restaurant Sakura, and the award-winning Indian Grand Trunk Road.

South Woodford boasts a great stock of Victorian/ Edwardian family homes, as well as newer purpose-built blocks of flats and conversions, so attracts families and young professionals. It has great transport connections to the City and Canary Wharf, and with Epping Forest on your doorstep, it’s got the perfect balance of everything you need.

My favourite local spots for walking are the Hollow Ponds, and the tucked away Elmhurst Gardens, with its two tennis courts. The nearby Woodford Dog Park is also a favourite, where both dog and owner meet up with their regular pals!

Transport links

Situated in Zone 4, South Woodford is handily served by the London Underground’s Central line, with frequent trains running to and from the City’s Bank in 20 minutes and Oxford Street in 30 minutes. The area is also well-served by local buses.

Local cinema

This cinema originally opened in 1934 with the film Cleopatra and the then-local MP Winston Churchill in attendance, but it’s now a seven screen state-of-the-art Odeon, which shows everything from 3D blockbusters to family-friendly animations and art house gems.

Great schools

The amount of families moving to South Woodford and standard of schools there are not unconnected. There’s a great range of schools, including primaries Nightingale and Snaresbrook.

Family friendly

Whether it’s raining and you want to catch a movie at the cinema or it’s a glorious day and you fancy exploring Epping Forest, South Woodford has got you covered. There are also family-friendly cafes, playgrounds and sport clubs to keep both parents and little ones happy.
